As a parent (especially a parent who’s on their own a lot, going to school full time, and a few other time consuming tasks that shall remain nameless), one of the most difficult things to do is find time to worry about myself.
But let me tell you right now, taking care of yourself is absolutely crucial. Taking care of yourself is that much more crucial when you happen to be a busy person who struggles with a mental illness. Taking care of you is part of your survival.
So here are my top 5 favorite (and easy) ways to walk off the craziness, and make it through the day:
1. Leave The Guilt Behind
Seriously, put it down and walk away. Quickly. I think the number one reason that parents (or anyone responsible of taking care of someone other than themselves) put themselves last is the constant nagging guilt that everyone and everything else desperately needs you right this second. Truth is, they probably don’t. You can probably walk away for a few minutes without the world coming to a grinding halt. So start by convincing yourself that you need you, just as much.
Remember, you can’t take care of everyone else, if you don’t take care of yourself.
2. Grab Your Phone & Lock the Door
Actually, it doesn’t have to be your phone. It can be a book, a magazine, a tablet…whatever. Pick up something frivolous that you want to focus on for a few minutes, and lock yourself in the bathroom. Proceed to sit on the floor and scroll through Instagram, or read a few pages of your book, or read someone else’s Facebook drama, if you’re in to that sort of thing. Point is, take a few minutes to walk away, and recharge.
Never forget to laugh. Look up funny things on the internet, watch a funny video, read a funny article. Laughing will make (most) things much better.
4. Reach Out to Your Village
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Some days I think that’s only because having other adults to share your crappy day or hilarious adult-ing fail with is the only way to keep your sanity in tact. So reach out…to a friend, to a family member, to random people on a message board, (to your blog audience…), and remind each other that you’re not alone.
Seriously though, I’m pretty sure showering is a life source. Nothing makes you feel as better about virtually anything as a good shower. Clock out of your responsibilities for a minute, and wash off all of your frustrations. Use some nice smelling soap, drop a few drops of essential oils in the bottom to diffuse in the steam, whatever makes you feel refreshed. Put on some comfy clothes, drink a nice cold drink, and get back to kicking the day’s ass.
